Take a Subterranean Journey to the Mediterranean--
in the Middle of California!
Forestiere Underground Gardens
Since 1906
Over 100
years-old!

* The stone pillars in this old photo of Forestiere's
Original Entrance facing Shaw Ave. were demolished
after his death so Shaw Ave. could be widened
.
* Because no historic protections were in place, busy
Shaw Avenue is now
just 6 feet from the
replacement gate visitors enter through today.
* Although three levels of historic protections are in
place, they are not enough to put a stop to a
proposed major overpass (to ease traffic over the
planned high speed train) just 150 feet away from the
main entrance to the landmark site and adjacent to
its northeast corner.

Thank you everyone who has been
supporting the Underground Gardens in this
latest challenge!   Local protections are one
more layer of armor for our communities and
their historical and environmental assets.

In May 2014, the National Trust for Historic
Preservation proclaimed:
"A New Age of Preservation:
Embark, Inspire, Engage"
This is exactly what we are asking you, our
visitors and supporters, to do:
ENGAGE!
Your presence & words are the best support
in  matters pertaining to preservation!

Tutor Perini/Zachry/Parsons is the
construction team that will be building the high
speed rail & overpass at Shaw & Golden Gate.

The Gardens is like a child, and we as parents
need to remain vigilant in protecting its future.
As we go about our busy lives, please help us
keep a protective eye out for this state & local
landmark and world-known tourist attraction.

Right now, the City and the High Speed Rail
Authority are working to minimize the impacts
to the Gardens regarding the Rail Overpass at
Shaw and Golden State.   We really don't know
what will happen next.   We will help keep you
informed, but we need your help too.   If you
hear about something that you think will
negatively impact the Gardens, please reach
out to us (call or email).    It's friends and
supporters like you that can help keep the
Underground Gardens from disappearing.

Thank you again for taking your time to protect
this irreplaceable historic treasure.

..."a region's historical resources help to define a
sense of place, connect us to our past, impart pride
in its citizens, and are also important in economic
revitalization and in heritage tourism."
